I’m Justyna, this year’s Challenge Leader for the Thailand Education Team with Community Action at Royal Holloway University, and we are all very excited about the upcoming adventure that is waiting for us. As a wonderful team of over 20 enthusiastic individuals, we are in the process of fundraising money to go to Doi Saket and volunteer in a primary school there. And so far, this year has been full of exciting and successful fundraisers that not only allowed us to come a step closer to our fundraising target of £2,250 each, but also helped us bond as a team.
This challenge has brought together students from across the university. We’re no longer strangers who pass each other on campus; now, we’re a community of first, second and final year students from various departments, united by a common goal: helping educate disadvantaged children, engaging them in different learning activities, improving English language skills, creating a friendly learning environment for them and simply making them smile!
So, how do we go about fundraising all this money? We understand that £2,250 per person is not a small amount but, as a team, we have been organising regular events that help us reach this goal. You might have heard of our regular pub quizzes in Crosslands, our BBQs in the Armstrong Gun or our paintball adventures at local venues! All of these group events have made a significant contribution to our fundraising target, alongside individual fundraisers that our team members have been organising – from glow stick sales in the SU and crepe-dinner-nights to bake sales across campus and several street collections, every one of our members has been involved in various activities. And of course, we have made sure that everybody can make the most out of their breaks from university by creating individual fundraising plans.
We’re also very proud to have a little fan club of people who regularly come to our events, support us in every possible way, help us spread the word about what we do on campus, and regularly win our raffle prizes, like jars of sweets and Domino vouchers!
Our team has been working all year to make sure that we embark on this journey to Thailand together as an enthusiastic group of friends, and we could not be more excited about the upcoming adventure that will not only allow us to make a difference to some children’s world but also provide us with a valuable lesson about how to become a global citizen.
Keep an eye out for our events! We’ll be back in third term!
See you soon,
